Luftwaffe (Wehrmacht)

   It was the air combat unit of the German Wehrmacht troops during World War II.  The Marine-Fliegerabteilung was disbanded in May 1920 under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, and Germany was prohibited from having any air force.  In the interwar period, German pilots were secretly trained at Lipetsk Air Base  in violation of the Treaty of Versailles.  With the rise of the Nazi Party and the rejection of the Treaty of Versailles, the Luftwaffe was officially established on February 26, 1935.  When it broke out in 1939, it had become one of the world's best, technologically advanced and combat-experienced air forces. By the summer of 1939, the Luftwaffe had a squadron of 28 aircraft.   German fighter pilots During World War II, nearly 70000 air victories were won, including 25000 by British or american aircraft and 45000 by Russian aircraft.

  103 German fighter pilots shot down more than 100 aircraft, with a total of around 15400 air victories.  About 360 pilots destroyed 21000 enemy aircraft in 40 to 100 air victories.  Also 500 fighter pilots   won a total of 15000 victories between 20 and 40 victories.  453 german daytime and Zerstörer (destroyer) pilots honored with the Knight's Iron Cross; 85 night fighter pilots, including 14 crew members, also won awards.  but impressive as the Luftwaffe's victories were, they had suffered heavy losses.  Along this war, approximately 76875 Luftwaffe aircraft were destroyed or significantly damaged; of these, 40000 were completely lost (by type, losses were 21452 battles, 12037 bombers, 15428 training, 10221 twin-engine combat, 5548 ground attack, 6733 reconnaissance and 6141 transport aircraf ).

  The Luftwaffe proved to be one of the forces in the German victories in Poland and Western Europe in 1939 and 1940.  However, it was used during the Battle of Britain as a result of insufficient German nevy.  Although the Luftwaffe inflicted serious damage to RAF infrastructure and destroyed many British cities during the ensuing Blitz, it was unable to take the besieged British.  After 1942, Allied bombing expeditions gradually destroyed the Luftwaffe's fighter jet power...
